Foldable lenses are made of soft material and can be implanted in the eye through the small incision of phaco surgery. Rigid lenses require larger incision for implantation during surgery and are thus used only during ECCE or ICCE.

The operated eye is patched for 2-3 hours after surgery. The patient is instructed to use eye drops after surgery for 3-4 weeks. Mild discomfort, irritation, watering, itching is common after surgery which usually reduces within 2-3 days. The patient is instructed to avoid rubbing or pressing the eye. The patient should also avoid exposure of the operated eye to dirty water, cloth or hands to reduce the risk of infection. Most of the restrictions apply only for a week after which the patient can continue with normal daily routine. There are no dietary restrictions and the patient can continue to perform light household chores or professional work immediately after the surgery.

Patients often assume that a cataract must be well advanced before surgery is necessary. This is not correct. If your ophthalmologist sees signs of cataract and you experience visual disturbances, consult with your doctor for options available before it starts to affect your vision.

The person must be 18 years or older with a stable power. A contact lens user must discontinue the use of contact lenses at least 2 weeks before the procedure. A detailed eye check-up is done to look for suitability for the procedure. Before the laser is done the eyes are checked with special machines to determine the exact power. The corneal mapping is done and corneal thickness is measured. In patients with high minus power a special retiona, which may need to be treated before the LASIK is performed. The LASIK laser is performed only after ruling out any contraindication and suitability of the procedure.

Pain after surgery is rare. The doctor will prescribe you with painkillers afterwards for a given number of days. If a patient does face pain, consult a doctor with no delay.
